Dairy Free Hot Chocolate with Coconut Whipped Cream

There are two types of drinks that call my name when I think of the holidays. One is a chai latte, and the other is hot chocolate (ok, three if you count hot toddies, which I guess you should). Starbucks pretty much has my almond milk chai latte on lockdown, but I can’t say the same for hot chocolate, so here we are.

I made this hot chocolate recipe with a coconut + almond milk blend, but you can use any non-dairy (or dairy) milk that you desire! It’s the perfect drink to warm you up on a cold night (or morning)!

Ingredients

Hot Chocolate:

  • 12 oz non-dairy milk (I used this one)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1.5 tsp cacao powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Coconut Whipped Cream:

  • 1 can of coconut cream, refrigerated overnight
  • 1 tsp cacao powder
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

Hot Chocolate:

  • Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium-low for about 5 minutes.
  • Whisk in the maple syrup, cacao powder, vanilla extract, and sea salt.
  • Continue to heat until your desired temperature is reached.

Coconut Whipped Cream:

  • Open the can of coconut cream and scoop the solid part into a mixing bowl, leaving the liquid behind.
  • Add the cacao powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and whisk until the mixture is fluffy.

Assembly:

  • Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mug and top with a dollup of coconut whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle with cacao powder and enjoy!
